St. John’s (Hain’s) members serve our local and greater community through the following:
Conrad Weiser Food Pantry
The Conrad Weiser Food Pantry provides emergency food to families and individuals in the Conrad Weiser School District. St. John’s (Hain’s) has supported this outreach ministry since 1981 by providing volunteers, monthly food donations and funds to purchase items from the Greater Berks Food Bank.
Little Acts of Love
Little Acts of Love (LAL) is committed to assisting elderly and disabled (age 60 and older), low-income, at-risk homeowners. Through youth and adult volunteers and their leaders, free home repairs are provided. All materials are purchased through the donations of local businesses, churches, and participating volunteer groups. St. John’s (Hain’s) adults and youth meet several times throughout the year to help Reading area residents with home repairs.
Ronald McDonald Mission House Project
Ronald McDonald House (RMH), Hershey, PA provides free rooms and meals for families with children hospitalized at The Hershey Medical Center. In 2011, St. John’s (Hain’s) began our commitment to the RMH program providing two opportunities to give back. A few times a year, volunteers travel to Hershey to prepare a breakfast or a dinner for the guests at RMH, a very fulfilling mission opportunity. As an ongoing project, shiny paper, magazines and soda tabs are accepted for the RMH recycling program.
Western Berks Shepherding Ministry
Western Berks Shepherding Ministries, Inc., is an outreach ministry for adults who are unable to drive due to illness, age or temporary disability. St. John’s (Hain’s) is one of 27 supporting churches that provides funding and numerous volunteer drivers. Transport is primarily for doctor appointments.
Christian Education Outreach
Angel Tree Project is an Advent project involving both the kids and the congregation for the benefit of the Salvation Army. Our Angel tree is intergenerational with Angel tags for both kids and seniors.
Lenten Project is a Lent project which benefits a different community charity each of the 6 weeks of Lent by having the kids and the congregation donate much needed items to benefit that charity.
Our Church’s Wider Mission
In the United Church of Christ, we call ‘Our Church’s Wider Mission, Basic Support, an offering that we pass on to our Conference and National setting of the Church because we are in covenant with them. This gift helps fund various ministries that St. John’s (Hain’s) could not accomplish on its own. These same gifts help strengthen our ministry, locally and nationally.
We also participate in: Neighbors in Need (a mission within the United States); The Christmas Fund, which helps support retired clergy; One Great Hour of Sharing, which is a global mission effort and disaster relief; and Strengthen the Church, which is an opportunity to help with new church starts and leadership development for existing congregations.
Being 5 for 5 is one sign of congregational vitality in UCC churches that fully support Our Church’s Wider Mission. 5 for 5 churches give to Basic Support and all four Special Mission Offerings. Special Mission Offering dates are: Neighbors in Need on World Communion Sunday, The Christmas Fund the Fourth Sunday of Advent, One Great Hour of Sharing is Fourth Sunday in Lent, and Strengthen the Church on Pentecost Sunday.
